From the Principal

Welcome to 2019

The 2019 School year has commenced very solidly. The Staff Development Days enabled great preparation and an excellent launching pad for the commencement of School routines and lessons. Purposeful learning programs began on the first two days, with all classes settled, including new students across both Campuses. In fact, our Marsden Park Campus has more than doubled the total enrolment number from 2018. By last Friday it was very clear that we all had successfully reconnected and that our new students and staff were feeling comfortable and warmly greeted. The Commencement of 2019 Assembly, as part of 'RJ Day' (recognising the School's outstanding namesake, Rev Richard Johnson, Chaplain for the First Fleet and Colony), reinforced our Christian heritage and learning culture based on Biblical truth and faith in the living Lord, Jesus Christ. Please read below the Bible narrative from Luke’s Gospel which we used in the Assembly:

Welcome back to RJ for 2019!

Already we are in the swing of starting the year well with quite a few events happening this week and next. These include our Years 3-12 Swimming Carnival (see notes below), Years 5 & 6 Camps (from Feb 11), Year 11 Study Camp (Feb 14-15), Year 7 Camp (Feb 20-22) and Year 7 Immunisations (Feb 14).

Primary Matters

From the Head of Primary

Welcome to the School year and a special welcome to new students and their families.

We have had a very smooth start to 2019. All families should have received Parent Information notes for the respective Marsden Park and Oakhurst Campuses. With 133 children in Primary at the Marsden Park Campus and 428 students in Primary at the Oakhurst Campus, we now total 561 students in Primary. Needless to say, the Primary staff will be kept very busy this year. We are all excited to be working with these children and their families to provide a wonderful educational experience for our students at RJ in 2019.

Mathletics 2019

Mathletics is ready to run for Primary classes for 2019. Mathletics is an online Mathematics program that supports student learning, allowing students to revise mathematical concepts they have been learning about in class.

Each week, teachers set tasks for students to complete. Each task focuses on one topic in mathematics. These tasks usually need to be completed before students can access other Mathletics activities. Students aim to achieve 85% when completing tasks. Encouraging students to achieve 85% encourages mastery of knowledge and provides for sustained practice of knowlege and skills.

Seesaw 2019

Primary classes are about to commence using Seesaw for 2019. Seesaw is a Digital Portfolio which enables students to showcase their learning.

Parents will be able to view a range of work samples each term across the Key Learning Areas. Work samples produced by students in 2018 included artworks, written texts, videos of students completing tasks, samples from workbooks and audio/visual works created by students.

Secondary Segments

From the Head of Secondary

Welcome back to 2019! The 2018 HSC results for many students were a great credit to themselves and all those who have been involved in their lives these many years. I have spoken to a number who are more than ready to begin the next stage of life’s journey, and they are brimming with confidence. Eighteen Band 6 results were achieved in a broad range of subjects and are a reflection of our commitment to work with students at a high level across all subject areas, so they can achieve the results of which they are capable. Bethany Seto was named in the All Rounders List (Band 6 in at least 10 units), and at least five other students achieved ATARs above 90. The School median ATAR was above the median ATAR from UAC of 69.65. For those students choosing a University pathway, over 89% have received offers into a variety of courses, some of which include Engineering, Education, Medical Science, information Technology, Science, Arts, Economics, Health Sciences and Zoology.Others are pursuing Year 13 through Sydney Missionary and Bible College or Anglican Youthworks, and several have gained apprenticeships. As they go along a new pathway, we rejoice with them all and look forward to hearing of where these paths take them.

From the Director of Welfare

Welcome to 2019.

It has been great to see all Secondary students make a positive start to 2019. With the process of issuing Diaries, Timetables, Locks and Lockers out of the way it is hoped that the students will make strong connections with others in their Home Groups. Please be aware that if you have any questions please contact your child’s Home Group teacher and they will be able to assist in having your question answered.

Squares Blankets Service

The SBS (Squares, Blankets, Service) service learning initiative, offers an opportunity to share with those who are less fortunate, by knitting or crocheting squares of any colour or pattern which are 20cm x 20cm.

These squares are put together to make blankets and donated to Anglicare for distribution.

Welcome to 2019 from Secondary Learning Support

We would like to say welcome to all RJ students and their families and to let you know how we can help in 2019. A Learning Support Teacher is responsible for each Stage: Mrs Kerrie Lyons (7-12 Learning Support Coordinator, Stages 4 and 6) and Mrs Annette Sicard (Stages 5 and 6). These teachers are very ably assisted by Mrs Deb Rowe, Mrs Danielle Terceiro and Mrs Kathryn Arkapaw our teacher aides who will be working with students from Years 7-12.
