Our Year 11 students were wonderfully hospitable to the visiting students from Kokusai Joho High School, Japan. They were lovely hosts, making us feel proud. Despite the language barrier at times, our young people filled us with great optimism because of the patient manner in which they interacted throughout the week and, by the Friday, the bonds between them were close and strong. Our Japanese visitors engaged in Secondary lessons as well as some Primary classes. The program was a fantastic success and the visitors certainly shared their appreciation before leaving. One interesting comment came from a casual teacher who, when on playground duty, happened to notice not only Year 11 but also a number of Year 10 and Year 8 students inviting the Japanese teenagers to join their basketball and volleyball games. Her words were: “They went out of their way to make sure they were included, made sure the ball was passed to them, applauded and high-fived them, and were just overall champions. It was enjoyable to watch our students demonstrate some really inclusive and kind character.”

Primary Matters

From the Head of Primary

We have had a fantastic term in Primary with lots of wonderful events, excursions and incursions, as well as sporting activities across both Campuses. As this is our last RJ Review for the term, I trust that families will enjoy a lovely holiday break and take time over the Easter period to reflect on the death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

ASSEMBLY

Well done to 2M at the Marsden Park Campus and 4J at the Oakhurst Campus who presented fantastic Assembly Items in Week 9 looking at new beginnings after the flood. Easter Outreach Assemblies will be held this week. Parents do not attend this Assembly. There is no Assembly in Week 11 due to the Years 3-12 Cross Country.

Bandaged Bear Day Donation

When delivering our merchandise, Mr Daniel Riger, a representative for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead was photographed with our Oakhurst Primary Captains and Vice Captains. The cheque shows our RJ Primary contribution to this wonderful fundraiser, a contribution of $2107.10.

Taiko Drumming

On Friday 22 March we had a visit from EZ Japanese to do Taiko drumming with our Years 5 and 6 students.

Secondary Segments

From the Head of Secondary

During the last few weeks we have been completing mandatory testing of Year 10 (HSC Minimum Standards) and this week will focus on the NAPLAN Practice Test (Years 7 and 9). The HSC Minimum Standards Tests have been completed in Numeracy (94% of students achieved at least Level 3 on the first attempt) and in Week 11, students will do the Reading and Writing tests during English lessons. These are skills-based tests and are designed to reflect basic literacy requirements for everyday life post-school.

Gold Award Ceremony for Daniel Kranendonk

Our first Gold Awardee for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was presented to Daniel Kranendonk on Wednesday 20 March in Sydney. The presentation service was conducted by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award NSW State office and was presented by His Excellency, Governor David Hurley. The Award Service was conducted at St Stephen’s Uniting Church in Macquarie St, Sydney and then followed by an afternoon tea at the NSW Government House near the Botanic Gardens overlooking the harbour.

Olson Reserve Park Maintenance

One of the projects that the School has become involved in Service Learning over the last year has been ‘The Adopt a Park Program', an initiative of Blacktown Council. The School helps maintain Olson Reserve, just opposite Oakhurst Anglican Church on the corner of Hyatts Rd and Jersey Rd. On Monday 25 March, 10 students accompanied by Mr Rowe worked with Ms Claire Gauci from Blacktown Council to help tidy and maintain the park. The students, from Year 7 to 11, picked up litter, weeded the garden area and planted a variety of native shrubs while developing their knowledge and skills in the area of native plants in our locality.

PI Day

On 14 March the Mathematics teachers were wearing t-shirts with strange slogans - 'Having too much PI increases my circumference'.

It must be PI Day!

Run For Bibles

Run4Bibles is an opportunity for our students to take the message of the Bible and share it with South African students, who have very little opportunity to have their own Bible. Over the past few years the students at Richard Johnson have participated in the Run4Bibles project during the School Cross Country. By being sponsored to participate in the School’s Cross Country on Thursday 11 April, students will help provide Bibles and study resources for students in South African Public Schools. It takes just $7 to provide a complete pack, a small investment that has the ability to bear the greatest return as the students in South Africa have the opportunity to study and learn from the Bible. We would love to raise enough money to send 100 Bibles to the students in South Africa.

Southern Cross Service Learning

Easter came early this week for Service Learning students who participated in visiting residents at the Southern Cross Aged Care Facility. Students helped residents paint tins and hats that will be used for Easter activities.

Year 12 Standard English Excursion

On Thursday 21 March, Year 12 Standard English had the fantastic opportunity to attend Riverside Theatre’s 2019 production of Arthur Miller’s play, ‘The Crucible,’ at Bella Vista Farm. Students were able to enjoy the experience of the theatre in this rustic setting. The play was performed in Bella Vista Farm’s barn where the dirt floor, wooden beams and smell of sheep added a layer of authenticity to the pioneering setting of the play. Students engaged with the cast, staging and emotionality of the play and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. They were also able to attend a two hour symposium after they saw the production. During this session, the director and cast performed key scenes from the play, linking them to the learning that the students had already done in the classroom. This was a rich time of learning.

From the P&F Association

From the P&F President

On behalf of the P&F, I trust that you have settled well into the routines of Term 1.

The 2019 P&F Executive Committee were recently elected, and I would like to welcome them and thank them for generously volunteering their time and talents. I ask that you continue to pray for the P&F as we work together to fundraise for the School.

Careers Report

From the Careers Advisor

To be or not to be that is the question? This is a frequent inquiry that careers advisors encounter when it comes to students' futures. While teachers can inspire students, it is a question that cannot be easily answered.

In 2019, we have had an exciting new start to careers as we begin to select future career paths and experiences for our Stages 5 and 6 students. In our new location in the Hub, the careers office is filled with amazing opportunities for all our students, where they can discuss the immense array of careers and post-school training of which they may have dreamed.

Sports Reports

Primary Sport Report

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

The Jump Off Day is on Wednesday 3 April for the Oakhurst Campus and on Thursday 4 April for the Marsden Park Campus. Just a reminder that parents are welcome to attend. For parents that are handing in money, this needs to be in to class teachers or Primary Reception by Friday 5 April.

AFL PAUL KELLY CUP

Our Paul Kelly Cup Gala Day is on today. We wish both teams the best of luck.

Secondary Sports Report

I can’t believe it is Week 10 already. We have had a jam-packed Term 1 with so many events and sports. It has been amazing to see all the positive achievements students have made. As this is the last Secondary Sports Report for the term, I will need to let you know what is happening for next term.

However, to finish off Term 1 Representative Sport in Basketball I have some great news. Our 15’s and Opens Boys Basketball teams have progressed through to the Grand Final and will be playing this on Tuesday 2 April. We are very proud of the efforts of the Boys teams in getting through this far. If they happen to be successful in winning their matches, they have the opportunity to represent the School and Zone at the CSSA Secondary State Basketball Gala Day later on in the year. Our Open’s Girls team narrowly went down to The Lakes Christian School last week. The 15’s Girls team only just missed out on a final’s birth this year. Congratulations to all involved in the competition this term.

Tips For Parents

Electronic Media Use

MENTORING YOUR CHILD IN THEIR ELECTRONIC MEDIA USE

Parents and carers can place appropriate limits on their children’s use of electronic media (e-media) by creating family rules, but an additional strategy is for parents and carers to be media mentors to their children.

Note: the use of “child” and “children” in this article focuses on young people ages 5-17.

As a media mentor, you can play an important role in helping your child to: be cyber-safe, be media literate, be a responsible digital citizen, learn values (such as consideration for others), learn things that will help their growth and development (e.g. handling emotional responses, time management, discernment).
