My apology to the School community for not conveying a fuller, more hope-based perspective, when writing to you recently about the COVID-19 Pandemic. In uncertain times, we can be assured of God’s overarching sovereignty, as well as His interest in everything which is happening around us. No matter what happens in life, we can depend on God, for He is the Creator and Saviour of all creation, especially any person who puts their trust in Him.

As a whole School, we will be involved in the tenth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) that occurs this Friday (20 March). Our Student Forum will host activities to encourage team work and respect for each other.

Each Secondary student will receive a “Take a Stand Together” wristband to commemorate the day. This wristband can be worn with the School Uniform until the end of Term 2.

Primary Matters

From the Head of Primary - Oakhurst

Children worry more when they are kept in the dark, but sometimes approaching concerning topics can prove tricky. The following links provide some helpful advice for speaking with your children about Coronavirus plus current medical information. These are American sites but still relevant.

Year 4 Claymation Incursion

On Monday 2 March, Year 4 had the exciting privilege of participating in a full day of Claymation movie making and editing. Each group was given a storyboard on which they had to write a simple narrative with an orientation, complication and resolution. Students then created their characters out of clay and designed simple backdrops using coloured A4 paper and pastels.

BABY NEWS

Congratulations to Mrs Kaleeny and her husband who are expecting their first child in August this year. Mrs Kaleeny is understandably very excited as were her class when we shared with them. Mrs Kaleeny’s Maternity Leave arrangements and replacement teacher will be shared with parents later in Term 2.

Secondary Segments

From the Director of Studies

We are now over halfway through the first term and most students have settled well into their classes. For our Senior students, the reality of assignments, homework and the workload of the HSC is starting to hit home. It is about this time of the term when reluctant learners may begin to demonstrate signs of 'school refusal'. Research tells us that the best treatment for school refusal is attending school. Consequently, we have an expectation that students attend for a minimum 85% of the available learning time. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, it is a legal requirement for students to attend school daily (unless, of course, they are genuinely ill). Secondly, it allows parents to direct students to this expectation when a student starts to show reluctance (and the reasons for that reluctance should be investigated). Thirdly, it says that learning has value. There is a life beyond schooling, and part of our role as educators is to prepare students with the necessary character, attitude and skills from across Pre-K to Year 12.
