As part of my final 3 RJ Review articles I’ll provide 3 brief snapshots of the School’s 24 years’ journey. The first 8 years took us from 26 students (in 2 classes from Kind. to Year 4) and 3 staff in 1997 to 445 students (in 11 Primary classes and Secondary students up to Year 10) and 34 staff in 2004. The School commenced with students in casual clothes, as both the School Uniform and the P and F Association were yet to be inaugurated. These pioneering years involved composite Primary classes, teachers often taking on subjects and other tasks outside of their normal experiences, regular working bees to reduce maintenance costs as well as volunteers running the canteen and uniform shop. The Church building was utilised for Assemblies, portable facilities catered for administration and staff, library took place in temporary spaces until 2004, and there was an uncovered hardcourt for PE/Sport. People worked hard together, generously giving countless hours in voluntary service, otherwise our School would not have made it through that first stage of growth as successfully.

Term 4 has arrived and soon Christmas will too! (Apologies for the early reminder – but it is my favourite term of the school year). While 2020 hasn’t been the year we had all expected it to be and we can’t change what’s happening around us, we can enjoy the opportunities and moments we get to spend with family during this time. I would encourage you all to be positive in your outlook and make the most of what we have with us now. We are reminded in Matthew 6:34 that we should not be anxious for the future or how we might live next year, or when we are old, or what we shall leave behind us. God has given us life and here Matthew is essentially encouraging us to trust in God. The One who knows us better than ourselves. Not an easy lesson to learn, but one we all need to traverse.

Primary Matters

Mrs Karen Shannon-Duhigg, Head of Junior School

From the Head of Primary - Oakhurst

We have had a positive start back to Term 4 and enjoying the Spring sunshine. Please refer to the Term 4 Parent Information letter that was emailed earlier this week for information about Term 4 events. The Parent Information letter is also available on the School website.

Our Friday Assembly series on the ‘I Am’ statements of Jesus is continuing this term, with KJ and KR bringing us the final installments. There is nothing quite like a Kindergarten Assembly Item – guaranteed to bring you joy! We are also enjoying our fabulous new ‘big screen’ over the Stage area in the Primary Courtyard. This screen was installed during the recent holiday break and provides a clear picture in all light conditions. We love it!

Mrs Narelle Taylor, Head of Diverse Learning (P-12)

From the Head of Primary - Marsden Park

We have enjoyed a very settled start to Term 4 at our Marsden Park Campus. Students in Pre-K and Kindergarten enjoyed a fun visit last week from KindiFarm where they got to learn about and pat a large number of farm animals.

Secondary Segments

Mrs Jenny Clay, Deputy Principal

From the Head of Secondary

The HSC starts today with over 73,000 students across NSW sitting exams in various English courses. There are strict protocols in place regarding maintaining the safety of HSC students, and students are asked to re-read and adhere to the advice given. No student should attend an exam if they are unwell, and they will be asked to leave and have COVID-19 testing if they come to School and exhibit symptoms on the day of an exam. Many of our students have already received early offers for University courses, but the HSC gives them an opportunity to finish well and be proud of what they have achieved.

Mr Stewart Rowe, Director of Christian Ministry/Service Learning (7-12)

Operation Christmas Child

One of the special programs that we are involved in each year is Samaritan’s Purse 'Operation Christmas Child', where students bring in goods to fill shoe boxes which are then distributed to some of the poorest children in countries overseas. Last year we sent over 130 shoe boxes overseas and would love to increase that number this year.

Year 9 English Science Fiction Talk

To compliment the study of our Science Fiction English unit this Term, Year 9 students had the opportunity to listen to an introductory talk on characteristics of the Science Fiction genre from our resident Science Fiction enthusiast and author, Mr Hughes.

Bikes Wanted for the Year 10 Service Week

During Week 7 of this term, the Year 10 students will be participating in Service Week, where they will be undertaking different service activities, both in and outside School. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, a number of the activities that the students would usually participate in are not available this year. This has given us the opportunity to implement some new activities.

LIMITING YOUR CHILD'S EXPOSURE TO HARMFUL CONTENT ONLINE

eSafety has developed a series of tips for parents and carers to help limit young people’s exposure to harmful content online:

  • Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age-appropriate.
  • Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to.
  • Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps.
  • Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online.
