The School Executive has determined our approach to the final weeks of this year. Given our Primary and Secondary sections may now meet as one ‘Assembly’, two special occasions focusing on the outgoing Year 12 students, after the successful conclusion of the HSC Exams, took place. Firstly, the Oakhurst Primary students hosted a wonderful Farewell Assembly last Thursday, then there was a lovely Graduation Ceremony on Friday morning, livestreamed to Year 12 guests (max. 2 per student) outdoors in the large courtyard, finishing with a ‘Walk of Acclamation’. Also, the School hosted a delightful Year 12 Formal in our Hall (suitably ‘dressed-up’ for the occasion) on Friday night, with staff and students in attendance. We were glad that the extra time and energy to arrange these special occasions were appreciated by the Year 12 students and their parents.

The end of the year is almost upon us. I can’t believe how close we are to the end after such an interesting year. With just weeks to go, we have a lot still to do. Year 10 are preparing for their week of Service Learning, Primary students are awaiting the announcement of leadership roles for 2021 at Marsden Park and at Oakhurst, students are involved in Music Concerts, and many others are preparing for our end of year Presentation events.

Primary Matters

Mrs Narelle Taylor, Head of Diverse Learning (P-12)

From the Head of Primary - Marsden Park

We are quickly coming to the end of our 2020 school year. I think we can all agree it has been a very different year, but it has still been a very productive year in many, many ways. Most significantly, our students have enjoyed a year of growth in their learning and development. COVID-19 restrictions have limited parent access to the School site and involvement in School events but through the wonder of technology, we have been able to still enjoy some community involvement in important activities. Thank you to our parents for your patience and flexibility this year as we have planned, re-planned and sometimes planned again to provide the best possible outcome for everyone within Government regulations. May God bless you and your family this upcoming holiday season. Enjoy the joy of Christmas and special time with your children. We all remain prayerful for a much more ‘normal’ 2021.

Mrs Karen Shannon-Duhigg, Head of Junior School

From the Head of Primary - Oakhurst

We are looking forward to a busy last few weeks as the 2020 school year draws to a close. Please see details for significant events outlined below.

FAREWELL YEAR 12

Primary students gave our current Year 12 cohort a great Farewell Assembly last Thursday. Cards were presented from each Year group to their Year 12 buddies who had made several visits to classrooms this year. A lovely Item was performed by a small group of singers and the Ricky J Dancers. The next day, as part of the Year 12 Graduation Assembly, all Primary students joined in the ‘Walk of Acclamation’ as we formed 2 long lines leading from the Hall to the Sports fields and applauded Year 12 on their final day at RJ. Our prayers are with them for their future.

Kindergarten Featherdale Excursion

On Wednesday 4 November, Kindergarten set out for their first ever excursion to Featherdale Wildlife Park. The bus trip there was very exciting and we loved seeing the bridges, trucks and other cars!

Secondary Segments

Mrs Jenny Clay, Deputy Principal

From the Head of Secondary

A wonderful Year 12 Graduation on Friday morning was followed by a beautiful Formal event in the Hall, transformed in the evening through the vision of Mrs Ghali and support of Mr Cockrem. Everyone loved the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ candelabras and the star curtains had to be seen to be believed! Another very popular ‘hit’ was the open photo booth; a definite ‘must have’ for 2021. Above all, students and staff had fun, a fitting way to end 2020 and the formal years of schooling in such a disrupted year.

Mrs Julia Scrimshaw, Head of Academics, Learning and Innovation (P-12)

Year 7 2021 Orientation

Due to recent health guidelines received from the Department of Education we find the need to alter our plans for our Year 7 Orientation Program. This has resulted in the number of Orientation Days being reduced to one and the Parent Information Session being held online.

The Orientation Day begins for all Year 6 students with their arrival at the School by 8.15am for registration (including current RJ Year 6 students).

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child this year has been another wonderful example of how our students and their families are willing to care for, and share with those who are less fortunate than themselves. I would like to say thank you to the whole School Community - Stage 4 students and Home Group teachers, their families, RJ staff, all our Stage 5 and 6 Home Groups and their teachers, and our Primary classes for their support of Samaritan’s Purse and Operation Christmas Child.

Mr Stewart Rowe, Director of Christian Ministry/Service Learning (7-12)

Year 10 Service Week

This year, Service Week will take place next week, from Monday 23 till Thursday 26 November. Students have received their activity allocation today.

RJ Reads

“Every summer has a story – what’s yours?”

The Secondary English Faculty is thrilled to launch ‘RJ Reads’, our Summer reading program, for 2020. Many students reconnected with books during the COVID-19 shutdown, proving the resilience of reading. This year we want to encourage students to keep reading over the summer to help stem ‘summer reading loss’.

From the Hub

It’s that time of year when all textbooks and other library items need to be returned. Please check at home, your lockers and classrooms to make sure you have them all. Any outstanding items you have may be charged to your School Fees account to enable their replacement.

SWIMMING

Marsden Park Campus finishes their swimming program this week. It has been great to see such enthusiasm over the course of this term as the students have developed their stroke techniques. Each class from the Oakhurst Campus will have their final lesson of the term in Week 7.

Secondary Sports Report

This unprecedented year is drawing to a close quickly. With only three weeks to go there is plenty of events still happening for RJ. At School we are completing a House Competition in the sport of European Handball. So far it has been a very popular and hard-fought competition. It has been great to see the enthusiasm of all who participate and watch the games. This House Competition will be wrapped up next week on Thursday with the top two teams to play off in a final.
