From the Acting Principal

Welcome Message from the Acting Principal

Mr Alan Dawson, Principal

From the Acting Principal

The beginning of the year always brings excitement and enthusiasm as everyone gets to ‘start over’, begin again. Some parents are often happy to have their time back, yet others are left feeling sad or even guilty that their child is starting school and not around home during the day. Some students are overjoyed at catching up with friends again while others are a little anxious about starting something new and having to make new friends. Teachers look forward to meeting their new students and beginning the learning journey together.

Lines of Communication 2021

From the Deputy Principal

Mrs Jenny Clay, Deputy Principal

From the Acting Deputy Principal

Welcome to a new school year! We were all expected to adapt to new rules and regulations over the holiday break, and I know a number of people’s holiday plans and celebrations were disrupted due to COVID outbreaks. Our family only just finished celebrating Christmas last weekend, due to two Melburnians not being able to travel to NSW in December. We were not the only ones, but it was wonderful to get together when we could.

Primary Matters

Mrs Karen Shannon-Duhigg, Head of Junior School

From the Head of Primary - Oakhurst

Back to another School year here at Oakhurst Primary! I hope everyone enjoyed Christmas and managed to spend time with family and friends. It was wonderful to see the smiles and hear the chatter and laughter of our Primary students as they returned last Friday. Our new Kindergarten classes commenced yesterday and have made a positive, settled start to ‘big school’. Of course, we were all hoping that 2021 may have begun without the COVID restrictions - sadly not to be, however, we have the advantage of practised routines already in place to continue for a little longer.

Mrs Narelle Taylor, Head of Diverse Learning (P-12)

From the Head of Primary - Marsden Park

Welcome again to the 2021 School year and to new families and families of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children commencing school for the first time. It was lovely seeing so many happy faces on Day 1.

Secondary Segments

Mrs Julia Scrimshaw, Head of Academics, Learning and Innovation (P-12)

From the Acting Head of Secondary

It certainly has been a very different Summer to the one we would have expected this time last year. We perhaps have not travelled or visited relatives like we maybe would have liked to, but in the most part, I feel very fortunate to live and teach in Australia. Many of my friends teach in the UK, and it is hard to hear of the struggles that they are facing. One of my greatest pleasures continues to be the time I spend with students helping them to learn. I can't imagine how hard it is to be in a situation that you have only seen your students face to face for a matter of weeks in the last year.

Mr Brad Maxwell - Head of Senior School

From the Director of Welfare

Welcome back to all students and families of the RJ Community, and a particularly warm welcome to families that are joining the RJ Secondary section for the first time this year.

The first few days of the school year involves a fair amount of organising and settling into new routines, both at home and at school. Secondary students would have received their timetable, locker, combination lock and student diary.

YEARS 3-12 SWIMMING CARNIVAL

A note went home on Friday asking for swimmers who were competent in the 100m freestyle and the 50m butterfly. Students may only enter these particular races if they have returned their slip, signed by a parent, prior to the Carnival. This needs to be given to Mr Mitchell by Wednesday morning. They are more than welcome to enter the other 50 metre events or the novelty events on the day.

YEARS 3-12 SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The Years 3-12 Swimming Carnival will be held at Mt Druitt Pool on Thursday 4 February. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to have parents/carers/spectators at this event. This will mean that all students will be transported from school to the venue and returned to school at the conclusion of the event. Face masks are required (Secondary Only) when being transported on any event buses, trains, or other methods of transport. Permission for this event and essential information will be through the RJAS App and Edumate. Please ensure that you have granted permission for all children in your family who are attending the Swimming Carnival.

Announcements

School Fees Are Due Soon

Thank you to the many families who have already finalised their Term 1 fees. It is appreciated.

The due date is this Friday, 5 February. Please remember that you can elect to enter into direct debit instalment plan to smooth payments over the year rather than paying in a lump sum. You can organise this yourself using the online Edumate portal via a computer (not via the App) or can call the TASC Group Office on 8567 4000 before the due date.

School Uniform Donations

Please donate any second hand Primary uniforms to the Oakhurst and Marsden Park Primary Receptions. Thank you.

Annual Permission for Local Travel

Thank you to the many parents who have provided electronic permission already.

If you haven’t done so already, electronic permission for local travel in 2021 can be given using the Richard Johnson Anglican School (Edumate) App or via Edumate online. Please go into the "To Do" section and follow the prompts to provide online permission before Friday 12 February. (Please ignore the September date noted when you open the event as the date is simply a placeholder and allows new families who join RJ during the year to be linked to the same note/event.)
