Ticket sales for our upcoming Secondary Musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, are selling fast. The Friday night performance is almost sold out with a number of seats still available for the Wednesday and Thursday evenings. This dynamic production will be an energetic portrayal of the life of Joseph through music, song, dance and technical production elements. This is the second time our School has produced a full-length Broadway musical production with ‘live’ instrumental accompaniment and you will not be disappointed in bringing your family and friends to our show. Details follow on the flyer at the end of this edition.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

The Education Act (1990) requires parents to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend school each day it is open for instruction. If your child is struggling to attend school, it is important that we work together to see an improvement in attendance. Home Group teachers in Secondary, Stage Welfare Co-ordinators and Primary Co-ordinators regularly monitor school attendance and will make the first contact with you if concerns arise. You will be invited to a School Attendance Conference with myself and the relevant Head of Section or Welfare if a pattern of unsatisfactory attendance continues.

BANDAGED BEAR DAY

Today was Bandaged Bear Day where many bandaged furry friends came to school to raise money for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. K-2 students enjoyed a House group morning tea Teddy Bears’ Picnic in the courtyard and all students participated in a variety of activities at lunchtime including a Teddy Bear disco, photo booth, teddy mini movies and teddy bear craft.

ASSEMBLY

In Week 7, 1/2P taught us about God’s great love for us in their Assembly Item, singing a song based on John 3:16 which states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” It was great to be able to welcome parents back to Primary Assembly in Week 7. House Meetings replace Primary Assembly this Thursday. 3/4M will be presenting an Assembly Item in Week 9 to help us learn how we can be more like God. Parents of 3/4M are invited to attend. Week 10 is our Easter Outreach Assembly. Parents do not attend this Assembly.

K-2 Water Fun Day

From the Marsden Park Campus

On Wednesday 10 March, Marsden Park Campus hosted our first K-2 Water Fun Day. What a blast! We had 3 amazingly huge inflatable water slides and a number of exciting water-based relays. Many children thought the very high Wave Crusher slide was the best, however, there were smiles and shrieks of laughter at all the activities. When asked the next day, the children unanimously stated that it was the ‘best day ever’.

Secondary Segments

Mrs Julia Scrimshaw, Head of Academics, Learning and Innovation (P-12)

From the Acting Head of Secondary

We are now approaching the latter end of Term 1, and most students are now well settled in their classes and learning. For Senior students, the reality of assignments, homework and the workload of the HSC is starting to become evident. For younger students, this may be the first time they need to work to a deadline, and many parents may experience for the first time what I would like to call the “last minute” assignment rush. In both cases, the key to approaching assignment activities is preparation and planning. Students must use their School diaries to plan and prepare for their tasks. For our Senior students, it always concerns me when I hear that a student has had to pull an “all night” session to complete assessment tasks. I believe that in most cases, this is avoidable and occurs due to procrastination.

HELPFUL BEHAVIOUR IS MORE THAN JUST GOOD BEHAVIOUR

Reflecting on conversations I have had with students, parents and Staff this term there has been a dominant theme, what is 'helpful behaviour' for students at RJ?

Year 10 English - Romeo & Juliet Incursion

Year 10 English students have been studying Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The focus of this unit has been on appropriation. They have explored the ways this classic play has been adapted over time and in various contexts.

AFL GALA DAY

We are hoping that the AFL Gala Day goes ahead this Wednesday at Jamison Park. Parents will be contacted via email or SMS if the venue is closed due to wet weather. Assuming that the Gala Day goes ahead, all of the boys are to meet Mr Mitchell at the Oakhurst Campus at 8:10am for an 8:15am departure. The bus will return to the Oakhurst Campus prior to 3:20pm.

Secondary Sports Report

We are now coming to the end of Term 1 for our Secondary Sports Program. We still have a few events in Term 1 that we are greatly anticipating.

The next big event for RJ will be the annual Years 3-12 Cross Country. This event is on Wednesday 31 March. We will be running this event at Hanna Reserve with Primary in the morning and Secondary commencing just before noon. We are looking forward to supporting Run4Bibles again this year with every $7 raised sending a bible and bible resource to young people in South Africa. Please get involved in supporting this campaign.
