Yesterday, our students commemorated the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, those who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served to protect our nation’s borders and freedom. I thank Mr Sukkarieh and Mrs Clay for arranging to have our Anzac services conducted at both of our Campuses.

As we move into the term, Enrolment Interviews with prospective families for 2022 placement will now commence. Demand for places at RJ is very high and we are excited about the opportunities we will be able to offer many families in Western Sydney through this process. 

The Western Sydney Christian Schools sporting competition kicks off this term for our Primary students as well as opportunities for students to be involved in the Da Vinci Decathlon. Please look out for further details.  

Our Year 10 students begin the process of selecting their subjects for Year 11 & 12 academic studies this week. They will be equipped with data from the Allwell testing they completed last term, recommendations from Core subject teachers, plus presentations by our Curriculum Coordinators which lead to an interviewing process with parents and students with one of our Executive or middle leaders to finalise their selections. If you have any queries about this new process, please contact our Acting Head of Secondary, Mrs Scrimshaw, who would be most willing to respond to you.

During the Easter Break, our maintenance team completed a wide range of works both at Marsden Park and at Oakhurst. I would like to thank Nate Ruston (Facilities Manager) and the Maintenance Team across our two Campuses for all their work these past two weeks. Their work continues to establish welcoming environments in which our students can learn and study.  

We will re-commence work on our Stage 3 Building at Marsden Park in the next few weeks and also hope to begin construction on the Paul Cockrem Senior Learning Centre some time during Term 2. As I finish this edition’s article, I share with you some images of the interior of the new Senior building.

Yesterday, we were able to hold ANZAC Commemoration Services at each Campus. It was a privilege to speak at these events, and my message was to always remember, and never forget. It has been harder these last two years with the cancellation of marches and limited attendance at Dawn Services, but I was thrilled to see some Primary children who nodded their heads when I asked whether they had stood in their driveway at dawn. That is a significant moment that they will not forget, and an example of how parents teach their children to honour and remember the spirit of the ANZACS.

You will find in Mrs Shannon-Duhigg’s and Mrs Taylor's article, a section on haircuts for boys. Please note the examples given of acceptable cuts. I can certainly see across the School, the influence of the current mullet style favoured by some rugby league players – please make sure that you have the conversation about acceptable hair styles before your son visits the barber, and certainly before they start cutting. The barber doesn’t have to worry about the consequences of a fade from zero, but they might make some more money from a return visit. 

Girls who have their hair braided must also ensure that the braids are tied back if the hair is longer than shoulder length. Just because it is braided doesn’t mean that long hair can be left out.

The same goes for piercings in Secondary. Please check the Diary – extra piercings cannot be filled with clear studs and students will be expected to remove them, regardless of how recent they are. This includes nose piercings. 

My other concern in recent times has been students taking photographs at school with their own cameras or on their mobiles after school. This is not permitted. The important issue here is privacy – we don’t know what is going to happen to the photos, and we have students at school who do not have permission to be photographed. As with all photos, other students can be caught in the background unawares. At School events, only authorised staff will take photos, or sometimes Photography students using School cameras and SD cards. This way we know the photos will be deleted once they are uploaded for school use. Staff also know that if they take photos of students with mobile cameras whilst on excursions, that these photos are to be deleted once uploaded to the School’s Photos file. Mrs Howard manages all photos displayed on the School’s electronic noticeboards.

This year we are presenting medallions to the winners of General Knowledge in each Stage, each term, which they can now keep. These will be presented at the first Assembly this term for both Primary and Secondary students. It was a very close competition, especially in Primary, and I will include the names of the winners in the next issue of the RJ Review. 

Enjoy Term 2 – there are lots of exciting things planned, and I know Secondary is really looking forward to the return of our Heritage Day Festival. It should be a memorable event!

WHICH UNIFORM?

Students are permitted to wear Summer or Winter uniform for the first 3 weeks of this term. We will all be in Winter uniform from Monday 10 May (Week 4). The mornings have become quite chilly so please send your child/ren with their jackets to School. The School beanie is also only to be worn to and from School and does not take the place of a sunhat. Please check that all clothing items are clearly labelled. 

MORNING AND AFTERNOON PICK UP AND DROP OFF

Thank you for adjusting to the new modifications in the morning and afternoons. A reminder if waiting for students and coming on School grounds of an afternoon, please avoid the Hardcourt and Courtyard and wait in Pioneers Way near the tables or on the Field.

PHOTO DAY 

Our School photo day at Oakhurst is scheduled for Thursday 20 May. Envelopes were sent home last week for orders to be placed. Please order online only. 

HAIRSTYLES AND RJ UNIFORM

The latest trend in boys’ hairstyles is the very short side shave with a distinctly longer section on top. ‘Lines’ shaved into the hair are also popular.

Our School Uniform policy states – Hair must be clean, kept tidy and well‐groomed. Hair should not hang/fall across the face or eyes. 

• No radical hair styles are acceptable (e.g. no undercut, mohawk, or shaved hair or below size 2 clippers). Also, no styles involving significant differences between the length of hair are acceptable.    
• In regards to hairstyles for all students, it should be recognised that due to the subjective nature of ‘styles’ it is difficult to describe exactly the School’s requirements. Any changes to a student’s hair must be subtle. Significant changes are not acceptable. If any student presented with an inappropriate hairstyle or significant change he/she would be requested to comply with this Policy immediately and would not be permitted to attend School until such action was taken. For the smooth‐running of the School, the Principal’s decision is final in all matters pertaining to this Policy and the appearance of each student.

In light of this, we ask that if you are taking your son to the barber or hairdresser, please say something before they begin to cut. A size 2 blade and a size 4 blade combination is acceptable – a size 1 blade is too short.

In terms of ‘lines’ a thin line in the natural part section is permissible, thicker and/or designed lines are not.

With our School photo day approaching, we do not want any of our boys sporting inappropriate hairstyles. If your son has recently had one of these differentiated cuts, please allow the short section to grow longer than a number 1 blade and have any long top sections trimmed.

MOTHER’S DAY STALL

On Thursday 6 May we will hold our Mother’s Day stall at School. Gifts will be $5 and $10. Students are to bring a $5 or $10 note only if they would like to buy a gift (please do not send coins). Students are permitted to purchase one gift (an exception can be made for families with stepmothers). A big thank you goes to Mrs Ghali and the generous volunteers who will be assisting on this day.

FRIDAY ASSEMBLIES

Our Friday Assemblies recommence this week with 4R presenting. Families will be sent invites to attend via email. This includes students receiving Principal’s Awards. As parents are now permitted to attend, we will no longer be videoing and uploading Assemblies to Seesaw.

SCHOOL BANKING

House Meetings replaced Primary Assembly in Week 1 and an Anzac Service yesterday from Secondary student visitors from the Oakhurst Campus replaced Primary Assembly in Week 2. In Term 2 we will be looking at the Psalms as the songs of God’s people. Kindergarten students will be presenting their first Assembly Items. KC will be presenting in Week 3, KP in Week 4 and KM in Week 5. Parents of the presenting class are invited to attend Primary Assemblies.

DA VINCI DECATHLON

Dua M will be combining with 7 students from the Oakhurst Campus to work collaboratively as a team to participate in the da Vinci Decathlon next Thursday 6 May via Zoom. Students complete academic challenges in 10 different disciplines including Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy. We wish Dua and the team our best.

HAIRCUTS AND STYLES

Parents are asked to refer to the section in the School Uniform and Presentation Policy relating to Hair Management prior to having their child’s hair cut and styled. Clippers may not be below a Size 2 and there should be no significant change in length between the top and sides/bottom of the hair. 

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART – JUMP OFF DAY

We had a fantastic day at our “Jump Off Day” on the last day of Term 1. The students enjoyed demonstrating their skills, as did the staff and parents who joined in at the end. It was great to have so many parents join us, having supported the fundraising of this event throughout the term. It was also wonderful that Jen from the Heart Foundation could attend, help judge the skipping and praise the students for their incredible skipping and fundraising effort. 

MOTHERS’ DAY STALL

The Mothers’ Day Stall for mums or special people in their place will be held next Friday 7 May, (with opportunities on Tuesday 4 May and Thursday 6 May for students in Pre-Kindergarten who do not attend on Fridays). Gifts cost $5 or $10. Please send a $5 or $10 note (no coins please) if your child would like to participate. We thank Mrs Ghali in advance for her preparations to date to ensure a lovely selection of gifts are available for students to choose from and for the generous volunteer helpers on the day. 

NAPLAN TESTING DATE UPDATE– YEARS 3 AND 5

NAPLAN testing will be held in Weeks 4 and 5 of this term. Students require personal headphones (earbuds are preferable) supplied from home. If your child does not already have headphones at school, please send them prior to 11 May. Please note the following NAPLAN testing dates:

• Tuesday 11 May – Writing
• Thursday 13 May – Reading
• Friday 14 May – Conventions of Language
• Monday 17 May - Numeracy

PUBLIC SPEAKING FINALS

The Public Speaking Finals were held in the last week of Term 1. The students entertained their parent audience, speaking on a range of interesting and insightful topics, and displaying their enthusiasm and oral presentation skills. Thank you to Mrs McLeod for organising this event, the Secondary Vice Captains for adjudicating and classroom teachers and parents who helped to prepare the students. 

RIVERSTONE FESTIVAL

RJ will be participating in the parade at the Riverstone Festival on Saturday 15 May. The Festival runs from 9:00am-3:00pm with a street parade at 11:00am involving RJ students. Students walking in the parade need to be at the Mill Street Reserve RJ marshalling area by 10:30am. The Festival includes stalls, carnival rides and stage performances. Come along and support our School by walking in the parade and enjoying this community event.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

School Photos for the Marsden Park Campus will be taken on Tuesday 18 May. All students (Pre-K to Year 6) are to wear their Winter Uniform on this day. Girls must wear the tunic and navy-blue tights, not socks. Hair is to be tied up with a small navy hair tie. Earrings must be as per the Uniform Policy – plain gold or silver stud or sleeper. Pre-Kindergarten children wear their long-sleeved RJ polo shirt, tracksuit pants and joggers. Further information relating to Uniform requirements is outlined below. Additional information is outlined in the School Photo note. 

SOCCER CLINICS

Soccer Clinics commence next week, Thursday 6 May and continue through to Thursday 17 June (excluding Thursday 3 June) for students who registered for these clinics. Please refer to the Registration note for further details. As a RJ staff member does not attend these clinics, it is essential parents collect children promptly at the appropriate Years 1-2 or Years 3-6 session finish time.

UNIFORM

From Week 4, Winter Uniform must be worn each day. Please refer to the School Uniform and Student Presentation Policy available on the School website https://www.rjas.nsw.edu.au/resources/general/ to ensure your child is in the correct Uniform. 

K-6 students are required to wear their Primary Jacket to and from School each day. They continue to wear their hat all year round. RJ beanies are available at Lowes. They may be worn before and after school and during recess and lunch. No other beanies are to be worn. The beanie is an optional Uniform Item.  

Pre-Kindergarten children wear the long sleeve polo shirt with the School tracksuit from Week 3 of Term 2. They may wear Summer or Winter Uniform in the first 2 weeks. For added warmth, parents may purchase the School jumper. No other items of clothing are to be worn (including skivvies or long sleeve shirts under the polo). 

WSCS INTERSCHOOL SPORT

WSCS Term 2 Interschool sport trials were held in Week 1 with the competition commencing in Week 3 and continuing each Wednesday throughout the term. Mr Mitchell will organise students into an interschool sport team or school sport based on the trial feedback from staff. Students need to have a drink bottle and hat for sport each week.

YEAR 6 PRIMARY LEADER’S DAY

On Monday 10 May, Year 6 student leaders (Primary Captain and House Captains) from both Campuses will meet with Year 6 leaders across The Anglican Schools Corporation for the annual Year 6 Leaders Day. This event will be hosted by St Luke’s Grammar School in Dee Why. The students will have a great day interacting with other leaders, developing their leadership skills and exploring ways they can extend their leadership within our School. 

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

Zone Cross Country will be held next Monday 3 May. Mr Mitchell will advise via note those students who qualified at the School Cross Country. We wish students the best.

According to Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC *), not getting enough sleep is associated with a range of physical and mental health problems that can interfere with current health and functioning and affect health well-being later in life.

Poor quality or insufficient sleep can affect young people's performance at school due to its impact on attention, memory, creativity and learning. Inadequate sleep has also been linked to poorer mental health and emotional regulation, including greater risk-taking and social problems, all of which may impact relationships with family, peers and others.

In terms of physical health, inadequate sleep has been associated with poorer overall health and a more significant current and future risk of young people becoming overweight.

The LSAC found that children not meeting minimum sleep guidelines were more likely to:

• Show symptoms of poor mental health (anxiety, depression, unhappiness)
• Be late for or absent from school
• Spend more time doing homework
• Have internet access in the bedroom or spend more time on the internet.

I think all these factors add up to the point that we need to get our children in the right place when it comes to bedtime. As our children age, it is easy to slip into the mindset of thinking that they require the same amount of sleep as adults. However, research clearly shows that our 13 to 18-year-olds still need between 2 and 3 hours more sleep than adults.

YEAR 11 SUBJECT SELECTION

Around subject selection time, teachers often get a lot of questions about particular courses. This is especially true for the different English and Maths courses and subjects that students have not experienced before. The maze that is the HSC subject selection process is complicated, and we constantly look to review how we support students and families at this time of the year. 

Tomorrow sees the first session of our Year 11 2022 Subject Selection Process. Our Year 10 students will receive an Information booklet, their Academic Assessment/Careers Report, along with the forms we will need them to complete before their final Subject Selection Interviews. Curriculum Leaders will present information on each subject area over the coming weeks, providing valuable insights into what is required for each course. Parents are also encouraged to discuss what is available, and to aid this process, we will again be sharing the Year 11 Subject Selection CANVAS page. 

Subject Selection Interviews on Wednesday 12 May will follow the Information Sessions. On this evening, parents and students will meet with our Curriculum Team for a 20-minute interview to discuss the pathways available in Year 11 and recommendations made by teaching staff. 

NAPLAN

As mentioned in my letter to families at the start of this term, students in Years 7 and 9 will complete their online NAPLAN testing in the coming weeks. These point in time tests are important as they provide us with helpful information about students numeracy and literacy skills. In preparation for these tests, may I remind students and parents of the need to bring the correct equipment? All students will need to bring a fully charged laptop, charging lead, a pen or pencil for working out and a pair of headphones or earphones that can be connected to their computer.

Following a long bus ride, students spent Day 1 of the camp exploring Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport. Following this we headed to our accommodation at Warrambui Retreat for dinner and finished the night together with a campfire. 

On Day 2 students enjoyed a lunch in the parks surrounding the Australian War Memorial before entering the Memorial for a guided tour. Students were extremely reflective as they visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and heard stories of our service men and women – this was a very appropriate experience for students heading into ANZAC Day on the Sunday. Students were also able to visit the National Zoo and Aquarium on the late afternoon before heading back to Warrambui for dinner and a movie night. 

On the final day students took part in a Mission Survivor activity run by the staff at Warrambui. The staff who travelled with Year 8 hope that the experience will remain a great memory for years to come.

Year 9 also participated in a My Kampsite Rules challenge by cooking their own meals and enjoying a fire each night to gather and cook marshmallows. I am proud of the students, particularly ones who were well outside their comfort zones and chose to push ahead into these new challenges. Sleeping in tents and getting up on a cold morning is not an easy feat, but most were encouraging each other to keep going and enjoy what the Camp had to offer. 

I would like to say a big thank you to the students who attended and put their best effort in to make it a great experience. I would also like to say a big thank you to the staff who attended. This included Miss Naomi Roediger, Mrs Nicole Inglis, Miss Tiffany Adams, Mr Adam Bunsell, Mr Rodney Leenman, Mr Justin Pereira and especially to Mr John Derrington who came in at the last minute to cover another sick staff member. I look forward to discussing with the students what they experienced and what they learned over the coming weeks.

It is not too late to collect sponsorship money for Run4Bibles. A $7 donation provides a Bible and studies for a Secondary student in a South African school. Could all students please return the money that they have raised for Run4Bibles by Friday 30 April. Please give your donation to Student Reception in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and Run4Bibles on the front of the envelope.

BASKETBALL CLINIC MAKEUP SESSION

The final makeup session for last term’s Basketball Clinic at Oakhurst will be held next Monday afternoon on May 3.

CSSA GYMNASTICS

We have our annual CSSA Gymnastics competition back on this year. If you have a daughter in WAG levels 3-10 or a son in any MAG level, they are eligible for competition. Please contact Mr Mitchell at [email protected] by the end of this week for registration.

CIS TRIALS

If you have a child who is competing at a high level in rugby league, rugby union or touch football, please let me know by the end of this week. We have selection trials in the next couple of weeks and I will need to nominate your child for this event. Please only put their name forward if they are of a high standard. CRICKET CLINIC – Years 3 to 6 students only

A Cricket Clinic will be held for students in Years 3-6. It will be held for 6 weeks commencing in Week 4, on Monday 10 May, at the Oakhurst Campus. Registrations will open shortly and information will be found on the RJ App. You will need to go to playcricket.com to complete the registration process. This will be an Active Kids Voucher activity and if you haven’t used it yet for this half of the year, it is available to use. Places are limited for this event.

Please note the clinic will not run on the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday in Week 9.

SOCCER CLINICS

Soccer Clinics for this term will be open for registration this week. Please go to the specified TryBooking link once you have received notification that the clinic is open for registration. The clinics will commence in Week 3. 

This will be the first time that Marsden Park will have a stand alone clinic, which will be held each Thursday afternoon. If you have a child at the Marsden Park Campus in both clinics, the Years 1-2 clinic finishes 15 minutes earlier than the Years 3-6 clinic. The note specifies that it is not the responsibility of the soccer coaches to supervise the children at this time. A parent should be there to pick up their child from this earlier finishing time.

SOCCER GALA DAY

We wish our Stage 3 girls the best of luck as they complete this Thursday at the CSSA Soccer Gala Day. Don’t forget to bring your shin pads and football socks. If your daughter requires football socks, these can be purchased at the School for $10.

WSCS AND SCHOOL SPORT

Parents should be receiving notification this week if your child has been selected for a WSCS team or if they are doing school sport for the term. If your son is selected for a soccer team, they MUST wear shin pads and football socks. We have a supply of the School navy socks at the Oakhurst Campus. If you have your WWCC and would be able to assist each Wednesday from 12pm-1pm, please contact Mr Mitchell at [email protected] 

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

The Zone Cross Country will be held on Monday 3 May. Mr Mitchell has already contacted parents via email of those children who are in the squad. The top 15 students in each race will then qualify for the CSSA State Cross Country Carnival. Despite this event not being open to parents, if you have your WWCC and would like to complete a Marshalling or Course Supervision job, please contact Mr Mitchell at [email protected]

SECONDARY SPORTS PROGRAM

The Secondary Sports Program kicked off last week with Years 7-10 heading out for recreational sports and trials for representative sports. This will run for the entire 10 weeks of Term 2. We are following a similar program where each year group will participate in a few activities that will be rotated throughout the term.

The lists for our Netball and Soccer teams have been posted and students will need to be ready each week for their games. It is advised that the representatives bring all their equipment (including drink bottles). These games start on Tuesday 27 April at Jamison Park (Penrith). I trust the students selected in the teams will give their best each week and enjoy the competition against other Schools.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

Next Monday (May 3) will be the Zone Cross Country held at Nepean Christian School. The Secondary students who placed in the top four (4) will have the opportunity to represent RJ at this event, with the chance to move on to the CSSA State Cross Country later this term.

SECONDARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Planning has already begun for the upcoming Secondary Athletics Carnival (Years 7-12). It will be held on Wednesday 23 June at the Blacktown Athletics Centre. I always look forward to the major Carnivals to see the RJ Community coming out to demonstrate their abilities in a range of events.

CSSA AND CIS TRIALS

Over the term I will be posting on Edumate for students who may be keen on attending Trials or Gala Days. Students need to be looking for them as they will have the information required to be nominated for any of these opportunities.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Playing music, sport, hanging with my family and my dog, watching Netflix or Stan!

When and why did you come to work at this School?

I came this year (2021) and I was looking to use my gifts of music in a Secondary school and where I could share my passion of playing the violin. My passion is music and playing the violin. Music is unique in that it can literally change student's lives as they play and enjoy their chosen instrument. 

What do you think you will enjoy about your role in the School?

I will enjoy sharing music moments with my students and also times where they will master something they think they cannot achieve! I look forward to seeing my string players create music together as they grow and improve their skills. 

Describe a wonderful experience you’ve had which you will never forget.

I was fortunate to travel overseas to Europe playing in an orchestra when I was 11 years old and I will never forget performing at St Paul's Cathedral in London. It's a magnificent church where Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married. It was spectacular and very special!

Why did you become a Christian?

I became a Christian as a teenager when I realised what Jesus did for me on the cross. Dying and taking my place and the punishment for the wrongs I have done (and will do). His resurrection three days later means I am guaranteed eternal life in Heaven with Jesus and now I can live with Jesus as my Lord and Saviour, in right relationship.

What is your favourite bible verse and why?

1 John 4:10 "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."

What is something you want to achieve?

I want to see my students achieve beyond their own expectations and to experience the joy of music.

If you could meet any person in the world at the moment who would it be and why?

Tori Kelly. Due to COVID her concert was cancelled as was the meet and greet! She's an amazing singer!!

• Oakhurst Campus Family (Sibling) photographs will be taken on the Co-curricular & Sporting Groups photo days in September (Term 3). They can however be ordered at the same time as other photograph packages.

All students must wear full Winter School Uniform, as per the Student Uniform and Presentation Policy, including Primary Girls Winter Tunic and long sleeved blouse with tights. Optional uniform items are not suitable for Photo Days. Pre-Kindergarten students wear their long sleeved polo and tracksuit.

The sessions run for about an hour (with morning tea) at the church, which is right next to the school on Hyatts Rd. There will be 7 sessions, running on Wednesdays from April 28 at 9:30am. If you would like to attend, please contact the minister, Jason Ramsay, through our website - www.oakhurstanglican.org.au. If that time is unsuitable, the sessions will run again in Term 3 in the evenings, so please look out for them then!
