The foundation of any partnership is to establish what it is you’re hoping to achieve, what does success look like, and how you plan to deliver it. That’s the basis of what a successful partnership is; identifying successful outcomes for all parties and a path to that success.

When it comes to educating a child, the partnership between family and school is a vital one. It is essential that both parties understand the part each plays and makes a decision to work together. 

This old poem, which I use in our parent presentations for prospective families who are considering enrolment at RJ, paints the partnership between School and parents beautifully. Take a read…

 I dreamed I stood in a studio

And watched two sculptors there,

The clay they use – was a young child’s mind

And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher, the tools he used

Were books and music and art;

One was a parent with a guiding hand

And a gently, loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled

With touch that was deft and sure,

While the parent laboured by his side

And polished and smoothed it o’er.

And when at last their task was done,

They were proud of what they had wrought,

For the things they had moulded into the child

Could neither be sold nor bought.

And each agreed he would have failed

If he had worked alone,

For behind the parent stood the school,

And behind the teacher, the home.

Coming up in Week 4 & 5 of this term are our RJ Community Connect evenings at our Oakhurst and Marsden Park Campuses. I would encourage both our Oakhurst and Marsden Park parents to book in to your respective evening and come and connect with other parents in the RJ journey and partner with the School leadership team as we talk about all things RJ. These nights are great opportunities to connect. 

At my Commissioning Service at the end of last term, I was honoured to have many special guests attend this significant occasion in the life of our School. Three of these guests were our State and Federal politicians who partner with us where they can in order to enhance the facilities of our School. 

Recently, with the endorsement of Edmond Atalla MP, and through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program, we were able to have the purchase and installation of a new electronic scoreboard for the Oakhurst Hall fully funded. What a wonderful acquisition! 

We are so grateful for the various groups, businesses and people who reach out to our School and partner with us to make not just a good school, but a great school. Not just a mediocre entity, but a successful one. RJ is a school all our staff, families and their children can be proud to be a part of.

Term 2 is a fresh start on many levels. There have been some minor changes to the Secondary timetable, there are excursions happening very quickly across the school, NAPLAN testing happens once more and Heritage Day items are starting to be rehearsed. Mr Rowe has been busy planning training sessions for the CRU Blast camp in the July break and taking expressions of interest for the North West Mission Trip. Primary students have been busily rehearsing for their Musical production and Year 12 finally received their jerseys! It was a very long time in the manufacturing process but a worthwhile wait. They look very impressive in an original design.

On one level life goes on. However, sometimes ‘life’ can appear to be happening on the surface, but underneath it’s not so great. I started pruning a tree on the weekend that looked like it was still shooting (shows how resilient it was) but inside the root it was rotted and eaten by borer. The things that we can’t see on the outside can have a terrible effect working from the inside. We have been able to secure some further counselling services for our school and now, more than ever, these resources are so valuable for students. If you have any concerns for your child, please talk to staff and we will see where we can assist, and make the recommendation for counselling if that is the most appropriate course of action. We work with a number of different agencies to care for children, and whatever we can do to help and to heal, gives our work deeper meaning and satisfaction. Your support and co-operation is vital in that process, and I have truly appreciated the conversations I’ve been able to have in that space over the last twelve months. I want to keep building strength and character in our students, and support them in the goals they set not just for school, but for life as well.

OPEN MORNING

Thank you so much for those who were able to join us on our first Open Morning in two years! It was lovely to have so many family visitors sharing the morning with us – there was a real buzz around the place! We hope you enjoyed seeing your child’s classroom, viewing other parts of the Primary section of RJ, being entertained by the wonderful musical items and completing the 25 Years/Activities ‘passport’ activity with your child.

A reminder that during School events, we do ask that the Church car park at St Marks is left free for the Childcare centre and Church use. Please park in surrounding streets or across the road at Plumpton Marketplace.

REDUCING RISK OF WINTER ILLNESSES

All students, staff and their families should follow NSW Health’s advice to reduce the risk of not only COVID-19, but also other illnesses that may affect schools this winter such as the flu. You are encouraged to adopt the following NSW Health advice including:

• Stay home if unwell.
• Keep up to date with vaccinations – including the flu vaccine, which is available from your local GP or pharmacy.
• Get tested immediately for COVID-19 if you become symptomatic and isolate until you receive a negative result.
• Practice good hand hygiene by washing regularly with soap and water.
• Take a RAHT before visiting vulnerable loved ones or going to large gatherings and events.

Thank you for your continued support in adhering to the current COVID-19 NSW Government regulations to promote a safe and healthy environment at School.

WHICH UNIFORM?

Students are permitted to wear Summer or Winter uniform for the first two weeks of this term. We will all be in Winter uniform from Monday 9 May (Week 3). The mornings have become quite chilly so please send your child/ren with their jackets to School. The School beanie is also only to be worn to and from School and does not take the place of a sunhat. Please check that all clothing items are clearly labelled – especially jackets.

MORNING AND AFTERNOON PICK UP AND DROP OFF

A reminder if waiting for students and coming on School grounds of an afternoon, please avoid the Hardcourt and Courtyard and wait in Pioneers Way near the tables or on the Field. The Hardcourt and Courtyard are very busy areas when the bell goes so this assists us with student safety.

HAIRSTYLES AND RJ UNIFORM

We are still seeing some boys coming to School with hairstyles that are not in line with our Uniform policy. These include very short, shaved sides with a distinctly longer section on top. ‘Lines’ shaved into the hair are also not permitted. Uniform infringement notes will be issued to these students.

Our School Uniform policy states – 

Hair must be clean, kept tidy and well‐groomed. Hair should not hang/fall across the face or eyes. 

• No radical hair styles are acceptable (e.g. no undercut, mohawk, or shaved hair or below size 2 clippers). Also, no styles involving significant differences between the length of hair are acceptable.    
• In regards to hairstyles for all students, it should be recognised that due to the subjective nature of ‘styles’ it is difficult to describe exactly the School’s requirements. Any changes to a student’s hair must be subtle. Significant changes are not acceptable. If any student presented with an inappropriate hairstyle or significant change he/she would be requested to comply with this Policy immediately and would not be permitted to attend School until such action was taken. For the smooth‐running of the School, the Principal’s decision is final in all matters pertaining to this Policy and the appearance of each student.

In light of this, we ask that if you are taking your son to the Barber or Hairdresser, please say something before they begin to cut. A size 2 blade and a size 4 blade combination is acceptable – a size 1 blade is too short.

In terms of ‘lines’ a thin line in the natural part section is permissible, thicker and/or designed lines are not.

With our School photo day on Thursday 19 May, we do not want any of our boys sporting inappropriate hairstyles. If your son has recently had one of these differentiated cuts, please allow the short section to grow longer than a number 1 blade and have any long top sections trimmed.

MOTHER’S DAY STALL

On Friday 6 May we will hold our Mother’s Day stall at School. Gifts will be $5 and $10 and students are permitted to purchase one gift, two if there are blended families with stepmothers. Please send the correct cash amount with your child on this day if you would like them to buy a gift.

FRIDAY ASSEMBLIES

Our Friday Assemblies recommence this week with 6R presenting. Families will be sent invites to attend via email. This includes students receiving Principal’s Awards. Masks are not mandatory, but we are requesting that if you are a household contact, you do not attend Primary Assemblies this term. Thank you for your understanding.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN commences for Years 3 and 5 on Tuesday 10 May and continues for the following two weeks including make-up test days for students who are absent. Please see the schedule in the Term 2 Information letter emailed last week. The students have completed practice tests and we encourage parents to not add undue stress to students sitting these assessments. Keep a solid routine happening at home - make sure your child gets to bed early, has a good breakfast, gets to School on time and stays relaxed and positive.

The next Oakhurst Community Connect evening is on Tuesday 17 May at 7pm in the School Hall. MOTHER'S DAY STALL  

We are pleased to offer a Mother’s Day Stall this year on Wednesday 4 May. If you would like your child to purchase a gift, please send $5 or $10 (single note preferably) on the day. Students are limited to one gift, although an exception is made if a child has two mothers (e.g. a stepmother). RIVERSTONE FESTIVAL 

RJ will be participating in the parade at the Riverstone Festival on Saturday 14 May. The parade begins at 11:00am involving RJ students. Students walking in the parade need to be at the Mill Street Reserve RJ marshalling area by 10:30am. The Festival includes stalls, carnival rides and stage performances. Come along and support our School by walking in the parade and enjoying this community event. Please refer to additional information sent home this week and complete and return the attendance slip to your child’s teacher if you will be joining us.  

WSCS SPORT

We are excited to be participating in an extended Western School Christian Schools (WSCS) Interschool Sport Competition this term for students in Years 3-6 across both Campuses. The Competition will continue most Wednesdays throughout the term (dates indicated on the email) and continue with new trials and sports in Term 3.  

SCHOOL PHOTOS 

School Photos for the Marsden Park Campus will be taken on Tuesday 17 May. All students (Pre-K to Year 6) are to wear their Winter Uniform on this day. Girls must wear the tunic and navy-blue tights, not socks. Hair is to be tied up with a small navy hair tie. Earrings must be as per the Uniform Policy – plain gold or silver stud or sleeper. Pre-Kindergarten children wear their long-sleeved RJ polo shirt, tracksuit pants and joggers. Additional information will be outlined in the School Photo note.  

MARSDEN PARK OPEN DAY 

Our Term 2 Marsden Park Open Day will be held on Saturday 21 May. New families interested in attending RJ should be referred to the School website to register their attendance - https://enrol.rjas.nsw.edu.au/events 

REPORTS  

School reports will be handed out on Thursday Week 9. The school has made the decision from this semester onwards to not send paper copies of reports home to families. This change aligns us with the way high school families receive their reports. There will still be a facility to ask for a printed copy of the reports if required during the last week of school after reports have been published to Edumate.

Year 9 will commence NAPLAN at the start of the day.

ASK BETTER QUESTIONS, GET BETTER ANSWERS

“If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on it, I would use the first 55 minutes to determine the proper questions to ask.” Albert Einstein.

Questions! Let’s try one. What colour is your house? You thought about the colour of your house, right?

Here are more fun questions. What are you proud of? What makes you most happy? Take a moment, think about that.

When you ask yourself a question, your brain is focused on that question. In fact, it works to answer the question.

Questions are a powerful way to focus your mind. When you hear a question, it momentarily hijacks your thought process on the question.

You didn’t consciously tell your brain to think about the question and answer it; it just did so automatically.

Questions are powerful. Hearing a question affects what our brains do in that instant it can also shape our future behaviours.

Questions trigger a mental reflex known as “instinctive elaboration”. When a question is posed, it takes over the brain’s thought process, and when your brain is thinking about the answer to a question, it can’t focus on anything else.

If you are solving a problem asking, “why is this happening to me?” may not be the best question to ask.

Perhaps a better question could be, “what do I need to make this situation better”?

3 Powerful Focus Questions

Here are three questions to help focus your mind on solutions rather than problems.

The first question is about Vision or the Outcome you want.

What do you want? (What are your goals?)

The second question is about purpose and reinforces your focus on the first question.

Why do you want that? (Why is it important to you)?

The third question is about action.

How will you get what you want? What’s your plan?

These three broad-based questions are beneficial in refocusing your mind away from over-thinking problems and more on what’s required to help me take the next best step toward a solution. 

Have these questions or others you may come up with on a poster in your room or perhaps on your computer or phone. 

Have a visual prompt of powerful questions that steer your focus and attention toward feeling better and toward positive actions.

This has resulted in the BBQ being postponed for this Wednesday, but it will be held later in the term. Orders that students have made both in Term 1 and over the past two weeks will be carried over to the new date that will be decided this week. Students will need to bring their own lunch on Wednesday. 

There is still the opportunity to donate to Run4Bibles. In exciting news, we are now over halfway to making our target of 200 Bibles. Thank you to the parents and students who have contributed towards the 105 Bibles already donated. 

Your child/children can still participate in Run4Bibles through: 

1) Sponsorship - $7 provides a Bible and study material for a student. We will not be using Sponsorship forms this year. Students can be sponsored to run/jog in the Cross Country and donate online through Try Booking: https://www.trybooking.com/BYFZE 

You can donate $7 for each Bible or you can make a donation.

2) Fun Activities -  Different fun activities have been organised by the Sports, Service and Chapel Captains. Students need to bring gold coin donations to participate in these activities. These activities will also be held at a later date to be confirmed.

The teachers managed to even the leger in a 22-minute battle royale in the Miss-no-loop competition. It was a wonderful way to wrap up the term. The skipping on display was fantastic.

The RJ Community should be extremely proud of their efforts to raise funds for the Heart Foundation. After our events wound down, our final figure raised was $24,052! Prizes will hopefully arrive towards the end of this term. 

SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

We look forward to our rescheduled Cross Country taking place at the lovely Marsden Park Campus in Week 4 on Wednesday 18 May. As a result of this, RJ will have a bye in WSCS for that week. Students who are 8, 9 or 10 years old run 2km, while students who are 11 or 12 run 3km.

The top four students in each race will qualify for the CSSA State Cross Country which will be held on Friday 27 May at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

Students who are 8 or 9 years old race together, as this is the pathway followed at future representative levels in this sport.

WSCS

We look forward to WSCS commencing in Week 3. If you are available to assist with refereeing football (soccer) or umpiring netball between 12pm-1pm on a Wednesday at Heber Park and Popondetta Park respectively, and you have your WWCC, please contact Mr Mitchell gmitchell@rjas.nsw.edu.au

SPORTING EXTRA CURRICULAR GROUPS MARSDEN PARK

As the Marsden Park Campus continues to grow, we look forward to offering more sporting clinics. The Football Clinic has run previously and will continue again in 2022. Similar to the Oakhurst Campus where an external sports provider runs a clinic in Terms 1-3, we will parallel this at Marsden Park - please note this did not run in Term 1 of this year with restrictions. This term, the external sports provider will be AFL.

As Marsden Park continue to grow, more sporting clinics will hopefully be offered to parallel the Oakhurst Campus.

• AFL Clinic - Week 3 will see a few sporting groups commence at Marsden Park. On Monday 9 May to Monday 30 May, there will be an AFL Clinic for Kindy to Year 6 students. Please note, the Microsoft Forms document was only to see who was interested in registering. Please refer to the flyer for actual registration. Parents will still need to give permission to the school for this event via the RJ app. When places are filled this week, the permission form will be visible on the RJ App towards the end of the week or early next week. 

• Football (soccer) Clinic - On Thursday 12 May (Week 3), the Football Clinic will commence again at Marsden Park. For the Years 1-2 Clinic, registrations are via https://www.trybooking.com/BZEQP. For the Years 3 to 6 Clinic, registrations are via https://www.trybooking.com/BZEQU. There are capacity limits on this clinic, so please book fast to ensure your child does not miss out. When places are filled this week, the permission form will be visible on the RJ App towards the end of this week or early next week.

Please let Marsden Park Office staff know if your child is intending on going to After School Care at the end of the Football Clinic. If not, parents should be punctual in picking up their children at the end of each session. Please note, the Years 1-2 session finishes 15 minutes prior to the 3-6 session. Coaches are not responsible for supervising your children during this time. 

SPORTING EXTRA CURRICULAR GROUPS OAKHURST CAMPUS

All sporting extra-curricular groups that have run previously will recommence in Week 3. There are some additional groups which will run for the first time, as mentioned in the Microsoft Forms document sent earlier this Term.

• Monday – Skipping Club with Mrs Evans - Those skippers who have registered via the Microsoft Forms document will be able to participate. As this Skipping Club has a purpose of eventually being able to be a registered Jump Rope For Heart Skipping Group, your child must be a talented skipper. Mrs Evans will trial students for a few weeks to determine if they will remain in the group. If there are any Marsden Park students who are talented skippers and are able to be dropped off at the Oakhurst Campus, please notify Mrs Evans at ievans@rjas.nsw.edu.au. The times for this group are 3:40pm-4:20pm. 

• Tuesday morning – Run Club Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6 students) - Please note that this is for Years 5 and 6 students only. Some students registered interest for students in younger grades. They are unfortunately unable to attend this session. We will focus on middle distance running and sprinting. Places for this are filling fast on the Microsoft Forms document that was sent earlier this term. When places are filled this week, the permission form will be visible on the RJ App towards the end of the week or early in Week 3.

• Tuesday afternoon – Netball Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2 students) - This is a new group commencing that will focus on Fundamental Movement Skills and introduce interested students to netball concepts. Please note that this is for Years 1 and 2 students only. Some students registered interest for students in older grades. Places for this are filling fast on the Microsoft Forms document that was sent earlier this term. When places are filled this week, the permission form will be visible on the RJ App towards the end of the week or early in Week 3.

• Wednesday morning: Todd Woodbridge Cup Squad Training - Last term saw trials take place for Stage 2 and 3 students. Those students who have made the squad will train on Wednesday morning in the Hall in anticipation for the TWC later in the year. A new permission form will be visible on the RJ App for those students towards the end of the week or early in Week 3. 

• Wednesday afternoon: AFL Clinic - AFL flyers should have been handed out on Monday for this event for K-2 students. Due to capacity limits, there will be a K-2 event for 4 weeks followed by a Year 3-6 event for 4 weeks. The 3-6 flyer will be distributed later in the term. When and why did you come to work at this School?

Term 2 2022 because I was looking for an opportunity to combine my love of teaching and sharing the Gospel. 

What do you think you will enjoy about your role in the School?

Getting to know the students, families and staff and being part of the school community. 

Describe a wonderful experience you’ve had which you will never forget.

Travelling to Europe and backpacking to so many different countries on my own. 

Why did you become a Christian?

Because I felt it was the right option, that it was the only correct way to respond to God's love and sacrifice for me. 

What is your favourite bible verse and why?

Micah 6:8 as it is a bit of a motto for me and a rule I try and live by: to walk humbly with my God. 

What is something you want to achieve?

To help get the Ricky-J students ready for their Primary school adventure in the best way possible. 

If you could meet any person in the world at the moment who would it be and why?

Marnus Labuschagne. Firstly I love cricket and grew up watching it with my dad. Secondly, he is such an inspirational Christian who is a great example of having God at the centre of your actions, and who is not afraid to speak the truth. 

What is your favourite food?

Seafood.  

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy exploring new parts of God's beautiful creation, mainly going on walks or day trips. 

When and why did you come to work at this School?

I'm starting in 2022. Our family has recently moved to Western Sydney so I was looking for a school to serve and work in close by.  

What do you think you will enjoy about your role in the School?

I'm excited to meet new students, families and staff and to support each to be their best versions of themselves.  

Describe a wonderful experience you’ve had which you will never forget.

What a privilege to be blessed with three beautiful children to love, serve, cherish and raise to know Jesus!  

Why did you become a Christian?

I was challenged as a teenager by God's grace offered to me through Jesus' death for my sake. I accepted Jesus' sacrifice for my sins way back then.  

What is your favourite bible verse and why?

John 15:4 - "Remain in me, as I also remain in you..." a life goal reminder. Nothing else is more important than remaining in Jesus! 

What is something you want to achieve?

I'd like to complete an overnight hike or two, preferably overseas whilst traveling. But who doesn't have itchy feet these days?  

If you could meet any person in the world at the moment who would it be and why?

Someone who's experience of life is completely different to mine, that I may be challenged, have my eyes widened and my heart changed.
